The ISB Domain has not been working for more than 12 hours now and all of us feel like we are cutoff from the world and from each other. Nothing seems to be working ......... which basically means that email is not working. Its funny how dependent we are on email to communicate with each other ........... now we have to go back to the age old methods of phones, messages, etc for communication!!!! This is a disaster ............... at least till the IT guys fix whatever problem it is!

On the bright side, I did finish quite a bit of work, did my readings and went to a party!

Today was the deadline for applying to BCG - India operations. Personally, I think that this is the second most coveted job on campus - after McK! So this should officially be the beginning of the placement fever ...... I just hope it ends with oodles of joy for everyone on campus!

Term 6 is coming to an end and so is this year ........ really a roller coaster ride!! I think the one thing that I really missed when I came back from the US was that I didnt have a lot of friends who go a long way back. I had lost touch with everyone who were from college and the ones who I was still in touch with were out of the country. I think that is one thing that ISB has given me in this one year ............ a few great friends and a lot of good friends!! As for the job, I am sure if we have made it till here, we will shine ahead too ;)

The placement fever has begun in full swing on campus. People are working on their resumes at all times of the day and night, be it in the cafe, the class room and even at parties!! Everything else seems to have taken a back seat - no one cares about their assignments, projects, exams, etc. Like someone told me, 'The one reason why most of us joined ISB is now here!'. So I have decided to religiously track the placement season - may be in retrospect I might find it funny......

BTW, for the uninitiated, DB and Goldman have already finished their recruitments and the deadlines for BCG, McK are fast coming up ...... Unfortunately for me, I havent found the right job to apply as yet. The consulting companies are very interesting and I would love to work there but so would 417 other people on campus ......... so lets see what comes out of the hat!!!

Back after a very long time

So I have disappeared from the world of blogging for a very long time. Reasons are the usual ........ too busy, blah, blah. Anyways I am back now and hopefully wont disappear again.

The Pharma & Healthcare club at ISB is hosting a grand summit with OPPI. Some great speakers like Ajay Piramal – Nicholas, Kewal Handa – Pfizer, Sangita Reddy – Apollo, Dr. Nam Perumalswamy – Aravind Eye Hospital, etc have agreed to be here along with about 100 delegates from various Pharma companies.

Term Break

I decided to stay back on campus this term break to experience the so-called pleasures of campus and Hyderabad. I dont know about others but the stillness of the place and complete inactivity has been less pleasurable and more of a torture to me ........ I have realized that its the people that make a place and not the buildings or the roads. Without the same people, this place feels like a large, sophisticated and luxurious prison!! And to top it all, I seem to have this continous feeling every morning that I need to be doing something but unfortunately I have no idea what ..... I guess we are just not used to being free.

The worse part is that I am not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing ........ the good part being that I am so used to being busy that I cant stay jobless but the flip side is that I cant live with myself in solitude!! Anyways, for now I am putting all of this behind me and battling my boredom of 4 days by watching a lot of movies every day, reading books, trying to write an article on Outsourcing and beginning some work on my ELP / PaEV!! ;)

I dont know ......... I really hope not! Suddenly I am feeling so tired of studying about NPV, APV, CAPV, Ruth Owades, Mittal, Aravind Eye Hospital, Break even, ABC, Inventories and tons of other stuff (of which I have no idea what I will retain) that I am waiting for this to get over. I guess this term was the toughest as yet considering the number of night outs we have done for assignments followed by early morning classes. My sleep schedule is screwed, I feel hungry at 3 in the morning and when I eventually go to bed at 5, I find it difficult to goto sleep!!! To top it all, my grades dont seem to show any of this .......... I was told that this year is going to be one hell of a roller coaster ride and I swear I am so dizzy now that I hope I dont fall off the ride!

Well, the good news is that apparently this term peaks in terms of being tough and then it falls down ...... Hope the better part of the ride starts soon!

Core Team of the Health Care Club

For some reason or the other, I just didnt have the time to post anything through this term ...... Assignments, ELP, PaEV, Health Care Club, etc seemed to take up all the time!! And, ironincally I always find time to post 4 days before the exam ......... I guess that would (partially??) explain my grades!!

Anyways, a lot seems to be happening this term .... I am doing my ELP project with Acumen Water Fund which seems pretty interesting on the face of it . Still deciding on the PaEV project though we have something very interesting currently on hand ...

Apart from that, the Marketing 2 grades were released today which has been something of a massacre ........ plenty of rumours floating around. There is a protest being lodged to the school about this and it is to be seen how much of a differnce it is going to make. Having said that and keeping in mind that the finals are 4 days away, some smart alec in Section B found the time for this limerick .......... Very hilarious!!

Why am I writing this blog when I should be studying for tomorrows exam?
Because of the picture above ........ imagine if the students (including me) come out of the paper hoping to get double digit marks especiall when the paper is out of 100. Thats how tough the paper was ....... I think this is one of the toughest papers I have ever had in my life .... VT, Veera - this beat Control Systems Engg final by Craig Smith at TAMU also!!! Thank god that the weightage on the final is only 25% and that there is relative grading.

Whats so great about the picture?
Well ....... It aptly describes my feelings (and a lot of ISBisans) right now that I just had to put it down. Thispicture was adapted by Muzammil Esmail (Muzu - You have the talent to be the next RK Laxman!!) a couple of hours after the exam.

And the worse part .....
I am sure there are still a handful of people who would have aced this paper too. I hate them so much because they screw up the averages and really skew the curve.

Anyways I think I should get back to my studies now to avoid any more DMOP experiences .......

Are Mumbaikars really resilient?

After the Mumbai blasts, every news channel is showing pictures of people still travelling on the trains immediately after the blasts without a care in the world. According to the news channels, this displays the resilience of the Mumbaikars and their commitment to thwart the terrorists' intentions. Personally, I think all this is a lot of crap!

Lets look closely at the people travelling the local trains ...... its those people who are travelling not because they are brave but because they have no choice. I am sure all of them have families and jobs and the only way they would earn is if they goto their jobs. Fortunately or unfortunately, the cheapest and the fastest method to travel in Mumbai is by local trains and so, of course people will travel on local trains even if they might be feeling scared. I think the media is just fuelling this romantic notion of the 'resilient Mumbaikar' just to sell bytes to the unsuspecting viewers.

Trauma Transforms!

Trauma Transforms ......... That is what the alums told us during our orientation when we asked them if we would be able to cope with the pressure, how difficult its gonna get, etc. I am not sure if all of us had understood what it exactly meant until recently.

After spending hours together with our respective teams discussing Competitive Strategy, deciding marketing plans in the Markstrat world, doing countless assignments together, having major debates, fighting over trivial issues like which font to use, etc I believe our team (Group D1) has transformed and come a lot closer to each other. Initially when we kicked off, we were all very defensive, trying to show who has the upper hand, etc but now all of us seem to have fallen into our chosen roles very seamlessly. Of course, we still have fights about our personal favourite fonts but now I think there is also mutual respect for each other and we seem to have bonded pretty well (Touch Wood!). Like SS said today, 'If all of us get together and form a company, I think we will do very well'. I thought it was absolutely true for 2 main reasons - we were a pretty diverse group (Pharma / Mechanical, CA, Advertising, IT, Sales / Marketing) and most importantly we seem to be working vey well together.

I really do hope this stays on all through our ISB time and hopefully beyond .......

Me, Veera and his bride, Rosa at Tandoor!!

My very good friend for more than a decade, Veera got married to another good friend of mine, Rosa today ........... they are so sweet together (Touch Wood!). We hung out in Bangalore all through the day, went for a drive to all our old hang outs and told Rosa stories of those good old times!! So many things seem to have changed in Bangalore - the city, Basavangudi, BMS, PES, and of course we have also changed a lot - from being happy go lucky college kids we are all now married men (Time does fly!). Nevertheless, it was a lot of fun and I am very happy I decided to go meet the newly wed couple even if it was from morning till evening.

And if you dont, you would have had you come to the theme party last night on campus. Organized by the GSB as a kick-off party for the year, it was very well organized with great music (very apt) and cool lighting! Kudos to the organizers .......

The only thing that bugs me is that a lot of people out here are not a sport at all when it comes to dressing for theme parties. The whole point of any theme party being the 'theme', I just cannot fathom why other than a regular bunch, no one makes any effort at all ......... worse, they walk in wearing their shorts & a t-shirt !!!

Anyways I had a lot of fun especially when complete strangers walked up to me and complimented me ............ Got a major kick out of it!!! ;)

Another Poker game ...

and I came in second this time which means that I made about 11% (Rs. 500) of the stack while the winner took away the rest. Though a lot of people might argue that it was not fair that I was allowed to buy-in a second time, I would say that since all the players at the table did agree its totally fair!! Anyways, personally I do think inter-buy ins (buy in from the players) and second buy-ins should not be allowed and the next game should probably be fair to one and all. That said, I am really beginning to enjoy the game and learning too in the process.

BTW poker beats 'Teen Patti' and the like hands down any day ........

Commanding Heights

Commanding Heights - a beautifully shot movie based on the book by the same name by Daniel Yergin by PBS is one of the most amazing documentaries I have seen which describes the rise of the Global Economy as we see today. It answers a lot of questions such as How did almost all countries in the world today end up being capitalist nations? Who were the chief architects in building this Global Economy? What are the pros and cons of a Global Economy? Why did the South East Asian miracle economies happen ? Is the current Indian / Chinese economy a bubble or is it based on strong fundamentals? And lots more ......... I think everyone (whether you know anything about economics or not) should watch this because it helps build your perspective on a lot of happenings of the past century. Beaten by the curve

The letter grades for 2 subjects in Term 1 are out and I have lost an 'A' by less than 1% ....... so now I have to live with a 'B'!! The worst part is that anyone between 60% - 83% (which is 63% of the class ~ 263 students) get a 'B' ........... I know that this is a Normal distribution and this is how Normal distributions work but now I really feel like I have been Beaten by the curve!! So either I perform way above average or average, it doesnt matter ......... there is nothing in between.

Has this motivated me to make that extra effort to get into the 'A' category? I am not sure because I believe that the Law of Diminishing Returns is at work here which means that for every additional increase in points, I will have to put increasing amount of effort ..... and the question to be answered is "Is it worth it????".

I have been diagnosed with Shingles and the doc has put me under heavy medication and advised me to stay at home and take rest for the next couple of days. So when all of ISB world is juggling their time between classes, Markstrat decisions and studying for exams, I am juggling (??) my time between sleeping, eating, and of course studying for exams! The good thing about my situation is that I have been forced a study leave, the food is delivered to my door step, I sleep about 12 hours a day and I have time to watch TV!!! And for those of you who think this is a good situation to be in, go find out how painful Shingles is .......

and I am technically 1/8th of an MBA. Anyways the picture above is of Section 'D' (my section for the Core terms) and the person in the center wearing an autographed T-shirt is our Economics Prof, Rakesh Vohra from Kellogg. Personally, I thought he was one of the best teachers I have ever had ........ it always was such a lot of fun attending his classes. He taught us Micro economics and Game theory and his method of teaching was just playing games in his class. Every class we used to play a different game with which he would illustrate the different models in Game theory ........

After the weekend we have our First term final exams and next week, Term 2 begins! All I can say is its been a lot of fun so far ........ next term is hopefully going to be more fun especially since I am fighting the elections for President-ship of the Pharma & Health care Club in ISB!!

P.S: Spot me if you can, apparently I have lost a lot of weight .... thanx to Sarovar (the food provider on campus)

Poker!

I played my first game of Poker last night and managed to win the full pot especially when playing against quite a few seasoned players!!! That doesnt go to mean that I am a very good player or anything but probably just Beginners Luck!! But I am very happy with my start .....

Coming to the game itself, I think it is a very good game .... almost feels like you are enacting Game Theory (which we are learning in Eco). But I think (a very humble opinion) why the seasoned guys lost is that they are used to playing with seasoned players, they are not used to a newbie taking stupid risks AND winning! So they based all their bets on how a seasoned player would behave, calculating probabilities and all that crap. But I guess there is also a factor of luck which I seemed to running high on last night (even though it didint figure when I got my mid term grades!!). All said and done, I won Rs. 1200/- on my first night of poker.

Wine & Cheese Party

The Morning after the party ........

Exams over and since Meenu was in town, we decided to host a Wine & Cheese Party at our place. It was a lot of fun organizing for the party, arranging for about 20 bottles of wine, different kinds of cheese, etc. But we did manage to arrange everything in a day and had a great party on sunday evening ........ thanx to Meenu!! We had 4 kinds of wine - Sula, Grover and Fontenoy - a French Wine both Sauvignon and Cabernet Sauvignon and almost 6 varieties of cheese. Almost 40 ~ 50 people turned up and it was on the whole good fun especially after the exams! I think the best part was that it was different from the usual parties where we keep playing the same old music, same old Whiskey, Beer, Vodka, Rum, etc ......... Like someone who had come for the party said "It felt like we still have some culture left in the campus"!!

Next time we plan to have a proper Wine Tasting event with a professional .......

Exam Fever!

Seems like the exam fever can strain the nerves of the ablest of able men be it a person with 780 GMAT or a person with 15 years of experience in the real world facing real life crisis!! I think about 95% of this can be attributed to peer pressure ........ after all who would want to seem lower than his / her peers in any capacity. The point of interest is that, considering we will be 3 weeks away from an exam at any time for the next 1 year, will everyone be this pressured every single time or will people get used to the fact and take it in their stride??

After understanding market dynamics in Economics class today, it feels so wonderful to think that you can explain (??) all the different scenarios in the world today armed with this theory - be it why a particular stock is soaring or why men hang around pretty women all the time. Everything scenario seems to fit the demand - supply model.

So, philosophically speaking, if all economic barriers (tariffs, taxes, ceilings, etc) of all sorts were removed in every field in the world, the whole world would work as one big efficient market place in equilibrium. But, I guess the flip side to this would be that this would ensure that only the fittest survive (and increase monopolies??) - meaning the producers or consumers who are inefficient would be eliminated. Is it really a bad thing?? After all, the homo sapien survived because he was fitter ........... may be a new race will develop which always strives to be more and more efficient. You must really have some patience to read all this especially when I have no idea if I am making sense or talking crap. So let me stop my ramblings here .......... Good night.

Election time begins

and this time its on campus! In ISB, there is an elected student body with several arms which basically interfaces between the student population, School management and other external organizations. Now all members of this body are elected by a simple majority and the candidates arent allowed to do any print campaigning just a Soap box event where the candidates express themselves regarding their suitability for the post.

Having said this, anyone would assume that it is a fairly simple and uncomplicated process but not at ISB! When you throw in 428-odd highly competitive students together there is so much of leg pulling, mud slinging, etc that the likes of "Amma" and Karunanidhi seem like novices at this game. People are drawing up their manifestos, creating core campaigning teams and working so hard that you might wonder what perks the post has. On the contrary, you will have to sacrifice academics to actually be able to contribute and justice to the job. Anyways, its all fun and I am loving it so much that now I am thinking of standing for one of the Club presidents post!!

Thats the song I keep humming to myself nowadays as a reminder because it is so easy to drown in Economics, Stats and the like. It feels like every subject is like a maze where you keep going in circles ......... For Eg, Eco talks everything in terms of Economic Profit / Loss, Economic Rent, etc which is totally different from the Profit / Loss we know and Stats seems like its some code which has z-value, p-value, t-value and what not! I mean who named them such randomn alphabetical names ..... hadnt they heard of self evident names???

And the best part is that I study the whole thing diligently, feel like I have mastered it all and I keep 1 step back and poof! Everything seems to have disappeared and I am again getting so confused with the basics that it would seem like I havent done anything productive at all. So I have decided to take a break, get out of the campus and go out for dinner ..... may be this will clear up my head!

B-School or J-School??

And by J-School here, I mean Jargon School! Thats because sometimes I wonder if we are learning something new or actually learning the same old common sensical things with a fancy name and getting trained to use it in our everyday lives. And just to prove my point, here are the top 7 interesting jargons (listed by order of priority as per my limited understanding) I have learnt over the past 3 weeks ...

Perspective on this ...... Perspective on that! (Apparently you need to have a perspective on every single thing thats happening in the world be it Emerging markets or Fish Markets!)
Value Proposition of .... (starting with you to everything else)
2 by 2 matrix (to represent every goddamn thing you can think of)
Intrinsic Brand Building (and there's an Extrinsic Brand Building too)
Marginal whatever you like to say (Costs, Profits, Revenue, etc)
Buzz Marketing (its got nothing to do with bees)
And of course Core Competency!!

Anyways, after a meeting with the Placement department today, we were advised that we need to "Talk the talk and Walk the walk" of whatever we aspire to become and not retain any of our old traits (talk like a Techie, etc) since they apparently hold us back in our 'dreams' to reach those dizzying heights in our career! Usually I would have said that this is all crap and go on living my life the way I have been but with the pressure of a 10 lakh loan on my head, I will listen to anything anyone (with some credibility of course!) has to say if that ensures a job and so, I have decided to consciously use at least one jargon in my daily conversation just to make sure I "Talk the talk".

An Old friend

It is always a very pleasant experience to meet an old friend, share old memories and reminisce about those carefree days. I had one of my very old friends (known him for almost 13 years now) come in to meet me today. We spent the whole day chatting and talking about a lot of stuff from Ramayana, Mahabharata to what causes an AC to drip! It just felt like the old times .........

At the end of it all, I think that there are some people whom no matter after how long you meet, it feels like you have known them all the time whereas there are those whom even if you meet them everyday, it feels like you dont know them at all. I am happier with just a couple of the former than a 100 of the latter. Hope I can make at least a couple of such friends at ISB ......

First Set of Ass!

To the ones who were expecting something more interesting after reading the title, I am sorry by "Ass" I just meant Assignments.

With the ending of Week 1, we were given 3 assignments - one each in Fin Acc, Eco and Marketing. The interesting part is that all 420 odd students seem to have finished the Fin Acc and Eco assignments both individually and collated it as a group by Saturday even though the deadlines were Monday morning!! The Marketing ass is being tackled by one and all such that it is completed by sunday or max monday ......... considering that it is due on Wednesday!!

I guess this is determined by the variable called "Enthu" which is currently very high (local or global maxima?) and in its transient state. Just for curiosity sake I am planning to track the variable "Enthu" to see where its steady state is and whether it drops at all and if it drops will it be exponential or linear. My prediction is that this will exponentially drop with its Limit tending to zero but never (hopefully!) reaching zero!

Week 1 of Core Term

And the core term finally begins !!! We have had a sample of all the different core courses and the profs are pretty good in their subjects especially since we have one each from Kellogg, Wharton, Columbia & ISB ! Anyways the parties seemed to have died down now and people around are more immersed in their books.

BTW Meenu was here this weekend before the Core Term started and we had a good time shopping / dining / partying together in Hyd. Sad to part but good thing is that I am back to my Bachelor on Campus status ;) Above is a pic of me & Meenu at Liquids. I guessed that since I never seem to have much to write, I might as well fill up the blog with pics ....... hopefully it is interesting for someone.

Pre Term begins .......

The pre term has begun and there seems to be a sudden transformation on campus. Now you dont get to see any parties, people seem to be spending time with their study groups and there seems to be a seriousness in the air about acads which didnt exist before. If pre term can cause so much transformation, I wonder what Term 1 will bring in ....

Anyways I am posting a few of the pics from the last party where I was the bartender. I have so much fun every time I become a bartender that I think I am meant to be one !

I think the first thing that hits anyone when one enters the campus is how beautiful the campus is ..... its almost as if you have stepped into a new world altogether. And one of the most hilarious things you get see as soon as you enter are signs saying "Peacock Crossing". No one has ever seen a peacock on campus and so I dont know if they are just shy creatures or if this is part of a management strategy to impress visitors !

The first week has been very hectic in the sense that there have been 3 parties already stretching out till 4 AM and back to back sessions beginning at 8:30 AM. Seems like the grind has begun even before the Term 1 !

Last week at EEI

This is going to be my last week at EEI (since for all practical purposes I am working till 14th) ! Its going to be a very different sunday same time next week ........ both for me and my wife. Especially for Meenu (my wife) since she will have to take care of the business alone - handle suppliers, customers, labour, admin and a host of other problems. But I am sure she can handle it well ...... after all its in the blood !
